Currency Exchange Rates Galapagos Islands

The official currency of the Galapagos Islands as well as Ecuador is the US Dollar (USD). The US Dollar replaced the Sucre in the year 2000 as the official currency of the Galapagos Islands. However, the Sucre, in all probabilities, will be continue to be the currency of the rural places in the Galapagos Islands for a bit longer, although the US Dollar has taken over the Sucre as the official currency of the Galapagos Islands. Generally speaking, other foreign currencies are difficult to exchange outside of Quito, Guayaquil, and Cuenca. Major credit cards are also accepted in large hotels which are spread evenly across the Galapagos Islands although a commission of around 6 to 8% is often charged to the tourists. Traveler's cheque is accepted in almost all of the major hotels and also in big shops spread evenly across the Galapagos Islands. Traveler's cheque can also be exchanged with ease in the banks located across the Galapagos Islands. However, a tourist might face inconvenience at times while he or she tries to exchange large denominations of traveler's cheque.In terms of the Galapagos Island's currency, 1 USD is equal to £ 0.52, C$ 1.18, A$ 1.29, R 7.44, € 0.76, NZ$ 1.47.
