Deep Sea Vents

Deep sea vents are counted among the underwater wonders of the world. They are also known by other terms such as deepwater seeps, deep-sea springs, hydro-thermal vents and black smokers. Deep sea vents are actually like geysers inside the sea. Hot and rich mineral water is continuously spouted by these vents. They are formed by volcanic and tectonic activity. Fascinating and varied sea lives are found in these deep vents.
Deep vents were discovered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the first time in 1977 in the region of the Galapagos Islands. Today, black smokers or deep sea-vents are mainly found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, at an average depth of 2100 meters. No sunlight can reach the pits where the vents are found and hence special submersible devices are the only means to know inside these vents. Pitch darkness, poison gas, heavy metals, extreme acidity, enormous pressure, frigid and searing water all exist in the depth of these sea vets.

But wonderful and unique kinds of sea life also co-exist in these conditions. Astounding communities of life survive in these vents and the inhabitants are perhaps the most interesting of all the world's underwater wonders from a scientific standpoint. Blind shrimp, giant white crabs, and a variety of tubeworms are just some of the more than 300 species of vent organisms that have been recognized by biologists till now. One of the strange and unique populace of these vents are the giant red-tipped tube worms-12-foot-tall creatures whose 300,000 tentacles strain food from the water. Similarly some of the other intriguing inhabitants of these vents also include pink vent fish, sea cucumbers, sponges, brittle star and flowerlike animals that use their excellent feelers to attach themselves to rocks.

The most salient detail to be noticed and studied about these vents is certainly the functioning of the food chain without sunlight. It was supposed previously that only sunlight, through photosynthesis, could sustain life on Earth. But, at the vents, however, life begins with bacteria that metabolize hydrogen sulfide. The bacteria, in turn, become food for the other animals in the vent society. Thus deep sea vents are really an example of the mysterious and wonderful creations of nature.
