Transport Facilities in Belize

The major transport facilities in Belize are offered by the highways, buses, taxis, airports and waterways.
Highways: Belize has four important highways which are paved with asphalt consisting of two lanes. These highways are Hummingbird Highway, Northern Highway, Southern Highway and Western Highway.

Buses: Buses are the major means of conveyance in Belize. You can book your bus tickets in advance from the terminals in Belize. To catch a bus from any point on the routes is the most convenient way to ride a bus. The buses ply more often on the Western and Northern Highways. The transport facilities offered by buses in the suburban areas are of a poor kind. The bus fares fixed by the express buses are costlier than the other ones.


The transport facilities in Belize offered by buses, is overall quite cheap and affordable. Really cheap bus services are available in the entire region of Belize, from the northern tip up to the southern part. In Belize the bus fares are based generally upon the routes and bus companies. The bus services in Belize are mainly operated by the National Transport Services. The shuttle vans also ply between the towns at a higher rate.
Taxis: Taxis also form another chief means of transportation in Belize. Outside the cities, the rates vary with the distance. The fare rates applied by the taxis are different in different cities and are decided by a discussion with the driver. However, taxi rates are set from the Belize airport to the center of the city.

Airports: With the international airport being Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, a large number of airports along with the local airstrips and airports provide a significant part of the transport facilities in Belize. Along with Maya Island Air and Tropic Air, a number of airline companies like Continental, American and US Air, provide the air services in Belize.

Waterways: The ports, harbors and Merchant marine ships offer the major transport facilities in Belize through waterways. A number of ships like short-sea passenger, bulk, cargo, container, vehicle carrier and specialized tankers carry on their services on the Belize waterways. Various water taxis also serve the coastal regions in Belize.

Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles also provide little portions of transportation in Belize. At present there are no transport facilities in Belize via the railways.
