Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls, the largest curtain of cascading water in the world, is a sharp and sudden discontinuation in the otherwise tranquil flow of the Zambezi. Due to an abrupt slit in the river basin the river water takes a 100 meter deep plunge, spilling into a basalt chasm between the Victoria Falls and a cliff facing it, which also made of basalt and capped with mist soaked rain forest.

546 million cubic meters of water plummet per minute over the edge at the height of the flood season (March-April). The spray of the Falls rise 1650 ft into the sky over the Zambezi plain and can be seen for miles around. It is twice the size of Niagara. The river, Zambezi, itself is the fourth largest river in Africa, and the only one that flows into the Indian Ocean.
The Waters near the chasm span 2 kms in width. The water then wildly rides out of the abyss and finds its way into the Batoka Gorge flowing further on to the Mozambique Channel off eastern Africa. The Falls was christened Victoria, after the British queen, by Scottish missionary David Livingstone in 1855. He was the first white man to see them. The earliest known inhabitants of the area around the Victoria Falls were the Khoisan bushmen.
They were followed by, the Tokaleya people, who called the falls Shongwe. Later, the Ndebele named them aManza Thunqayo. Finally, the Makolobo tribe of Africa, who live in the area, gave the Victoria Falls its existing native name - "Mosi oa Tunya" -which means 'The Smoke that Thunders'. The Victoria Falls forms a natural border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Falls are divided into five separate waterfalls: Devil's Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls and Eastern Cataract.
