Seven Wonders of the Natural World |
Nature in itself is a wonderful entity. She is the architect of the most beautiful and immortal works around the globe (though man-made causes threaten many of them). However, her craftsmanship exceeds the others in seven of her works. These we call the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.
A list of the names of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World are:
|
|
The Mount Everest: Crowning the Himalayas, it stands at 29,000 feet above sea level and was formed approximately 60 million years ago when India (which was then a continent) collided with Asia.
The Great Barrier Reef: Lying under water the Reef spans 2,000-kilometer along the northeast coast of Australia, and is made up of the skeletons of marine polyps that lived and died just under the surface of the sea. Pollution, climatic changes and human interference, however, are proving a threat. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World to lie under water

The Grand Canyon: Living up to its name, it is indeed as 'grand' in terms of magnificence as it is of size. Caused by millions of years of erosion, it is now a national park - Grand Canyon National Park.
The Victoria Falls: Thunderous and of awesome power, it is a fall caused due to an abrupt 328-foot deep gash on the flat river basin between the Victoria Falls and a matching cliff across. The Harbor of Rio de Janerio: Framed by the mountains, it is located on the east coast of Brazil. Thinking they had reached the mouth of some immense river, the Portugese explorers called the bay "Rio de Janeiro"(River of January) in honor of the month they arrived on.
The Paricutin Volcano: Mexico's Particun Volcano is a part of recent history. It was born on February 20, 1943. It exploded out of a Mexican cornfield 322 kilometers west of Mexico City. In a years time the volcano's cinder cone towered 1,100 feet above ground level and in two years its slow-moving lava flows buried almost the entire town of Paricutin and also partially buried a neighboring town, San Juan Parangricutiro.
The Northern Lights: Caused by particles in a solar wind interacting with Earth's magnetic field, they are shimmering sheets of light. Their displays are symmetrical. The auroras - borealis and australis - are known more familiarly as the northern and southern lights. However, only the northern portion is designated as one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.
