Golden Gate Bridge

Once known as a 'bridge that cudn't be built', The Golden Gate Bridge links San Francisco with Marin County in absolute splendor. Completed on May 27, 1937, during the years of the Great Depression, the Golden Gate Bridge was, for quite a while, the longest suspension bridge in the world. Building the bridge was an immensely challenging task as the area was dogged by winds blowing at 60 mph, constant foggy weather and whipping ocean currents in the canyon below. The Golden Gate Bridge took a little over 4 years to be built at a total cost of $ 35 million. It charges a toll of $5 on entering San Fransisco.

The two towers of the bridge stand at a height of 746 ft. the pier of the Golden Gate Bridge is 1,215 ft from shore and the distance between the two towers is 4,200 ft. Its cable are 3.61 ft in diameter and contains 80,000 miles of steel wires - enough to wrap the equator three times! In accordance with its natural surroundings, the Golden Gate Bridge was painted orange.

The Golden Gate Bridge claimed eleven lives were during the period of construction.Efforts to build the Golden Gate Bridge began as early as 1928. It was a distinguished engineer, Joseph Baerman Strauss, who first dreamed of it. And even though his vision was dismissed as impossibility, he held on to it, and, finally a span was erected across the Golden Gate Bridge. The actual work on the bridge began on January 5, 1933.

When the Golden Gate Bridge was completed, it silenced all of Strauss' critics. More than60 years after its completion, the Golden Gate Bridge still remains the world's tallest suspension bridge. It survived the Loma Priets earthquake in 1989, and it has been shut traffic only three times due to adverse weather conditions. Currently the span is undergoing a seismic retrofit so that it can withstand earthquakes measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale and lasting for a maximum duration of 90 seconds.
