Empire State Building

Although the Empire State Building has been surpassed as the world tallest skyscraper - which it remained for 41 years - it remains an architectural hallmark; the blueprint against which every other skyscraper has been compared for the last 65 years. After the September 11th attacks, however, it has resumed its position as the world tallest building. Given its dimensions, it was built in an extraordinarily short time span of 1 year and 45 days, in 1931, without any overtime.

The iron workers riveted the 58,000 frame in 23weeks and the masons did the exteriors in 8 months, while the plumbers laid 51 miles of pipe and the electricians installed 17 million ft of telephone wire! The Empire State Building was designed by Shreve, Lamb and Harmon and takes its name from the nickname of New York State. The project was hurried to completion in order to take the title of "world's tallest building" from the nearby Chrysler Building. The Empire State Building was officially opened on May 1, 1931 by President Herbert Hoover by pressing a button in Washington, D.C. that turned on the lights of the building's lights. The Empire State Building celebrated its 75th birthday on May 1, 2006.

The Empire State Building is located at 350 Fifth Avenue, between 33rd and 34th Streets in Midtown Manhattan. Built in Art Deco style, the Empire State Building stands at 1,250 ft and has 102 floors - and so was the first building to have more than 100 floors. Its height, including its broadcast antenna, which was added in 1952, is 1,472 ft. The Empire State Building belongs to the World Federation of Great Towers. Its spire was originally designed to be a depot for zeppelins, but the idea was abandoned and declared dangerous and impractical after a couple of test attempts. The building weighs approximately 330,000 metric tonnes, has 6,500 windows, 73 elevators and 1,860 steps to the top floor. The total floor area is 2,200,000 square feet.

On Saturday July the 28th, 1945, at 9:49 a.m. a B-25 Mitchell bomber accidentally crashed into the north side, between the 79th and 80th floors, due to a thick fog. The fire was extinguished in 40 minutes, but 14 people were killed in the accident.
