Transport Facilities in Istanbul

To enjoy traveling along the city of Istanbul, you must first get aware of what are the major transport facilities available in Istanbul.
Airports: The two important airports in Istanbul are Ataturk International Airport located near to Yesilkoy and Sabiha Gokcen Airport on the east of Bosporus.

Akbil Transit Pass: You can buy the battery-powered Akbil at a very cheap price at any of the major bus stations. It is valid on all forms of public transport like the trains, metro, trams, buses and ferries.


Bus: Various places in Istanbul can be reached by the city buses. The tickets are really cheap which are available at the kiosks. There are two intercity bus terminals in Istanbul, the more important one being Istanbul International Bus Terminal, located at Bayrampasa. This bus terminal serves all parts of the country and also the countries like Greece, Balkans, Bulgaria and Europe. The Harem Otogar Bus Terminal serves Middle East and Anatolian Turkey.
Tram: Transport facilities in Istanbul are also offered by the two tramways in Istanbul. The ride by the traditional Istiklal Caddesi Tram is more enjoyable. But the modern Kabatas-Zeytinburnu Tram is the more functional one.
Metro: Currently two metro lines are operational in Istanbul. The light rail connecting Ataturk Airport and the Aksaray Square through the Otogar Bus Station is of most use for the tourists. A usual metro line operates from Taksim Square.
Tunel: It is the 19th century underground railway system of two stations linking Karakoy and Istiklal Caddesi offering entertainment and convenience.
Underground funicular: The most recently inaugurated underground funicular links Kabatas and Taksim Square on the shores of Bosporus.
Suburban Train: The Suburban Trains leave from the Sirkeci Station, and after rolling about the Seraglio Point, carry on along the shore of the Sea of Marmara, to stop at Yenikapi Ferry Terminal and Yesilyurt.
Ferryboat: The transport facilities in Istanbul, which offers the most interesting way to travel around, are the ferry boats covering small water routes.
"Sea Bus" Catamaran: Everyday at peak hours new shiny catamarans carry passengers all around the city up to the Princes Islands. These catamarans have routes up to the Sea of Marmara to Bandirma and Yalova.
Ships and Cruise lines: International ships and foreign cruise lines arrive at Yolcu Salonu in the northern part of Galata Bridge in the central area of the city.
Taxi: Transport facilities in Istanbul are also offered by the numerous yellow colored taxis. These taxis run on the roads of Istanbul fueled by natural gas.
Dolmus: The shared taxis or minibuses in Turkey are known as Dolmus. This offers a very practical and cheap mode of transportation in Istanbul. The fares vary with the distance covered.
