| One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Wall of China was enlisted in the World Heritage by UNESCO in the year of 1987. Stretching approximately 6,700 kilometers, the Great Wall runs right through the country. It has a history of more than 2000 years and today, most parts of the Wall are damaged or further yet, entirely disappeared. However, owing to its historic significance, it is and will remain the primary attraction for tourists all over the world.

Built as a defensive fortification by the three states of Yan, Zhao and Quin in the Spring, Autumn and Warring States Periods, the Wall went through constant repairs and regular extensions during the rule of the later dynasties in China. It did not become the "Great" wall to begin with because it began as independent walls for the different states of China. During the Qin dynasty's rule in China, Emperor Qin Shihuang had the walls joined in order to protect the country from invasions by the Huns in the north.

Since then this historic Wall has served as monument of the Chinese nation. Local resources were used heavily for the construction of the historically significant Great Wall. A huge number of people, primarily the localites, prisoners, soldiers. The wisdom and tenacity is demonstrated through this architectural masterpiece.
The Great Wall was mostly built during the Ming Dynasty. The Wall starts from Shanhaiguan Pass in the east to Jiayuguan Pass in the west running through provinces of Liaoning, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Shaanxi, and Gansu. The China Great Wall Academy is working hard towards protecting this historic storehouse.
Less than 30% of the Wall is in proper condition today due to the effect of the forces of nature and destruction caused by mankind. The Great Wall unfolds a significant part of the Chinese culture. Chinese mythology and popular symbolism refers to the Great Wall. Simatai, 10 kilometer north east of Beijing offers the best view of the Great Wall.
