Mount Rushmore National Memorial

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is best known for the faces of the four presidents carved on the mountain. This epic sculpture, against the back-drop of south Dakota's Black Hills, links the faces (60 ft each and 500 ft high) of the four exalted American presidents - Washington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Lincoln. Sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, the drilling began in 1927 on the 6,200 ft mountains, taking 14 years and $1 million to make this 'Shrine of Democracy'.

Though the sculpture is the star attraction of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial , there are other treats to be found as well. The four great faces overlook a spread of pine, spurce, brich and aspen. The hiking trails in the Memorial lead to bald granite peaks taking you through old growth ponderosa pines. You can see a wide array of wildlife big and small. Biking the steep and curvy road provides quite a thrill for bicyclists and motorcycle riders. The Black Hills area has been a significant area for many cultures across many generations. Though July and August are typically hot, the summers are generally made of warm days and cool nights. The winter months mainly have moderate weather with some below zero temperatures as well. Afternoon thunderstorms in the summer may bring damaging hail and on occasion fog may obscure any view of the Memorial and snow may fall as early as September and may last until mid-May.

The Memorial has very recently installed the new Avenue of Flags, leading from the Concession Building to the Grandview Terrace. So, the flags of the 56 states and territories fly below the Memorial at Mount Rushmore National Memorial . The Avenue provides direct and easy access to the Grandview Terrace and Presidential Trail, offering spectacular views of the mountain sculpture. There are other programs that are offered to the visitors, that include guided walks to the Sculptor's Studio, Presidential Trail walks, talks on the Grandview Terrace, afternoon children's activities and studio talks.
