Gustave Eiffel's design that beat 700 other designs in a contest went on to become 'The Monument of France' and, more particularly, the icon of Paris. Built to host the International Exhibition of Paris in 1889 commemorating 100 years of the French Revolution, the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated by King Edward VII of England (then, the Prince of Wales). However, it met with sharp disapproval from some of the most famous contemporary personalities of France.
