Eiffel Tower of Paris

Gustave Eiffel's design that beat 700 other designs in a contest went on to become 'The Monument of France' and, more particularly, the icon of Paris. Built to host the International Exhibition of Paris in 1889 commemorating 100 years of the French Revolution, the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated by King Edward VII of England (then, the Prince of Wales). However, it met with sharp disapproval from some of the most famous contemporary personalities of France. The protest petition of 300 names included the names of Maupassant, Emile Zola, Charles Garnier (architect of the Opéra Garnier), and Dumas the Younger

The Eiffel Tower stands at a total height of 320.75 meters (including the antenna) and until 1930 was the tallest tower in the world. The tower alone measures 300 meters. The Eiffel Tower weighs 7000 tons, and sways to a maximum of 12 cms in times of strong winds and the height varies up to 15 cm depending on temperature. The Eiffel Tower took 300 steel workers, and 2 years (1887-1889) to be built. It has 1652 steps leading to the top.
In 1909 it was almost torn down, but due to its antenna, which was used for telegraphy at that time, it was saved. In 1910 it became part of the International Time Service, the French radio in 1918, and French television in 1957. The tower has three platforms. A restaurant, the Jules Verne, is on the second platform. The top platform has a bar, a souvenir shop, and the office of Gustave Eiffel, which has been recently restored.
