Taj Mahal History

The Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India is one of the most glorious and marvelous manmade monuments in this wide world. More popularly known as the Taj it has been instrumental in inspiring poets, painters and musicians to try and express its indefinable and mysterious enchantment through words, colors and melodies since time immemorial. The Tajmahal in Agra is an embodiment or personification of undying and eternal love. It owes its existence and origins to a very poignant and romantic albeit tragic love story of all times.

Historical facts of Taj Mahal The main protagonists of this love story are Emperor Jahangir's third son Prince Khurram and the beautiful Arjumand Bano Begum. They fell in love with at first sight at the tender age of fifteen and went on to get married at twenty. Later when Prince Khurram succeeded his father to the throne he took up the name Shah Jahan which meant "King of the world" and his beloved begum Arjumand Bano became Mumtaz mahal which meant the "Chosen one". Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal loved each other deeply and were quite inseparable. She even accompanied the emperor on several of his military trips.


They were on a military expedition in south of Agra when Mumtaz died during the child birth of their fourteenth child. She was just thirty-nine years of age during the time of her death. Shah Jahan became desolate and heartbroken after her death. Legends have it that it was then that Shah Jahan decided to build a mausoleum for his beloved wife and make it such that it remained unparalleled in the whole world. Work on the mausoleum began in 1633 and 20,000 most expert workforce toiled for 22 years to erect the Tajmahal of Agra as it is today.
History of Taj MahalArchitects, inlay craftsmen, calligraphers, stone-carvers and masons came from all over the world to build this monument of love. Since then people from all over the world come to India crossing the seven seas to see this great and incomparable monument to love and have become captivated by its beauty and splendour.
