Taj Mahal of Agra

'Let the splendor of the diamond, pearl and ruby vanish like the magic shimmer of the rainbow. Only let this one teardrop, the Taj Mahal, glisten spotlessly bright on the cheek of time... '( Poet Rabindranath Tagore ) What other words can better explain the Taj Mahal of Agra, the magnificent mausoleum of medieval times? The stunning beauty of this white marble edifice of Agra can inspire the imaginations of many great poets of the world and can make anybody's heart skip a beat when one stands in presence of its grand stature!

Taj Mahal was built between 1631 and 1654 on the bank of River Yamuna by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in loving memory of his beloved second wife, Mumtaz Mahal, a Muslim Persian princess. It took twenty thousand people and 22 years to finish this piece of art. It was designed by the Iranian architect Ustad Isa .The material was brought in from all over India and central Asia and it took a fleet of 1000 elephants to transport it to the building site. The semi-transparent white marble was brought from Rajasthan, the jasper from Punjab and the jade and crystal from China, the turquoise from Tibet, the Lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, the sapphire came from Sri Lanka and the carnelian from Arabia.

The Taj thus rises on a high red sandstone base topped by a huge white marble terrace on which rests the famous dome lined by four tapering minarets. Within the dome lies the jewel-inlaid cenotaph of the queen. So exquisite is the workmanship that the Taj has been described as "having been designed by giants and finished by jewellers".

The architecture and its adornments are linked to the passion that inspired it and hence called the "symbol of eternal love".

The Taj is a miracle of colours. The Taj is pearly pink at dawn, milky white in the evening and sparkling golden when the moon on the shines monument of love. It is generally considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements of Islamic, Indian, Persian and Turkish architecture.
