Myanmar Transport Facilities

If you want to enjoy your trip in Myanmar, you must first have the knowledge of the various transport facilities in Myanmar. Due to the geographical location of Myanmar, which is surrounded by mountains, transport facilities in Myanmar through land, are almost absent. The major transport facilities in Myanmar are provided by the waterways through the rivers and the sea. Some airlines also provide international transport facilities in Myanmar.

Among the roadways, the Myanmar Road, which connects Lashio with Kunming in China, and the Ledo Road, linking Myitkyina with Ledo in Assam, are the major roadways in Myanmar. A major part of the roadways in Myanmar are unpaved and most of the paved roads in Myanmar are covered with gravel. The rest of the roads are very hard to be accessed by cars, jeeps, or oxcarts.
The railways date back to the British colonial period and are not in a good condition. The total length of the railway tracks are around 2,480 miles connecting only to the major cities of Myanmar. The most important tracks link Yangon to Prome and Mandalay up to Myitkyina.

The waterways provide most of the facilities in Myanmar for public transportation. The waterways within the country include about 7,954 miles of traversable passages. The canals and rivers provide major part of inland transport facilities in Myanmar through waterways, which are accessed by large liners and ships for trade and commerce.

The major airline company in Myanmar is Myanmar Airways which is government owned, serving some major international cities and countries. The domestic flights in Myanmar have been reorganized due to the joint ventures with the airline companies of Singapore. The domestic airlines other than Myanmar Airways include, Air Bagan, Air Mandalay and Myanmar Airways.

The buses in Myanmar are not often used for plying long routes. Pick-up trucks in Myanmar are accessible for chartering. The old-fashioned buses provide an enjoyable, affordable and easy means of transportation in Myanmar. Other interesting transport facilities in Myanmar are offered by the trishaws and horse carts.
