This magnificent epitome of love was built by Shah Jahan when Mumtaz died at the end of the 19 year old married life. The city of Agra was the chosen city of the Mughals for building monuments in the vast land called India. The Taj Mahal is no exception in regard to this preference by the Mughals. History is not very clear regarding the origin of the name Taj Mahal.
Whatever recorded history we have from the court history of Shah Jahan calls the Taj Mahal as the rauza (a tomb) of Mumtaz Mahal (which means "Exalted One of the Palace"). The Taj Mahal, when literally translated, means either the "Crown Palace" or the "Crown of the Palace". This historical monument was built in 1631 by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his second wife Mumtaz Mahal who was a Persian princess. The Taj Mahal, being a befitting resting place for an emperor's empress stands on the banks of the river Yamuna. It was Mumtaz' wish on her death bed that Shah Jahan build the Taj Mahal for her after her death. So today history has many pictures on record for this monument of love for the world to see.
