Climatic Conditions Greece



A republic in the southeastern part of Europe, Greek lies on the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula. Greece is well known for grapes, olives and olive oil. The climate of Greece is divided into three types that can be found in the entire region of the nation. The climate of the nation is strongly affected by the Pindus mountain range.The western side of the mountain is prone to the southwesterly and thus is wetter than the eastern part.
The three types of climate in Greece are the Mediterranean, Alpine and the Temperate. The Mediterranean climate comprises of mild, wet winters while the summers are hot and dry. The Mediterranean type of climate is generally found in the regions of the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Crete, Eastern Peloponessus and parts of the Sterea Ellada region. Although snowfalls occur some parts but the temperature rarely reaches the extreme values. The Northwestern part of Greece and the central parts of Peloponnese is dominated by the Alpine type of climate.
One can obviously come across the temperate type of climate in Central Macedonia, East Macedonia and Thrace. The winters here are cold and damp while the summers are hot and dry. Being located in the transitional area, Athens is one such place in Greece that features both the Mediterranean and the Temperate types. Athens receives an annual rainfall of 16 inches. The northern suburbs of Athens enjoys the temperate type of climate while the downtown area and southern suburbs is dominated by the typical mediterranean type of climate.
