Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was located in the city of Bodrum on the banks of the Aegean Sea, in south-west Turkey. It was built as a memorial for king Mausolus by his wife queen Artemisia after his death. He died in 353 B.C which left his wife heart broken. Then she decided to build a splendid tomb as a tribute to Mausolus. Unfortunately even Artemisia did not live to see the mausoleum built entirely. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was finished three years after the demise of Mausolus and a year after the death of Artemisia. This structure became so well known that now any remarkable tomb is known as a mausoleum derived from the name Mausolus.
The Mausoleum stood on the precincts of the city of Halicarnassus for many centuries. The invasion of Alexander the Great in 334 B.C. and the attacks by pirates in 62 and 58 B.C also couldn’t destroy the mausoleum. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus remained in good condition for 16 centuries until a succession of earthquakes devastated the columns and sent the stone chariot crashing to the ground thus causing damage to the roof and the colonnade.
In the present day, the mausoleum still stands in Bodrum, and the polished stone and marble blocks of the Mausoleum can be seen within the walls of the structure. Some of the sculptures which endured the test of time are put on display at the British Museum in London. These comprises of broken pieces of statues and many slabs of the wall paintings depicting the conflict between the Greeks and the Amazons. Of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus itself, only the foundation remains.

The sculptures of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus were engraved by four skilled sculptors of Greece. There names were Bryaxis, Leochares, Scopas, and Timotheus and each was accountable for one side of the wall. The Mausoleum holds a special position in the annals of history because unlike the practice of those times, it was not dedicated to the Greek gods but was decorated with the figurines of people and animals. These days many of retrieved artworks from the mausoleum are found in the Mausoleum Room at the British Museum.
