Great Pyramids of Giza

The building of Pyramids began in Ancient Egypt as an upgradation of the traditional idea of a platform or mastaba. The mastaba was a covering for a royal tomb. In time, this traditional practice developed and a mastaba pile-up was used - this was the Pyramid. No wonder that in 1798, when Napoleon invaded Egypt, he expressed his admiration for the Great Pyramids of Giza, exclaiming: "Soldats! Du haut de ces Pyramides, 40 siècles nous contemplent" (Soldiers! From the top of these Pyramids, 40 centuries are looking at us).

The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) is the only one of the three great pyramids to feature in the list of the Wonders of the World. It was commissioned by the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu of the Fourth Dynasty in about the year 2560 BC. It was to serve as his tomb after his death. It took around 20 years to build it. Blocks of stone were transported and placed at the prepared site, though it remains a mystery as to how. To smooth its surface, an outer casing was used (it no longer remains).

The pyramids of Giza were referred to as "The Granaries of Joseph" and "The Mountains of Pharaoh". Located in Greater Cairo, the Great pyramid once used to be 481 ft high, however, over the years it lost 30 ft at the top. Not until the nineteenth century AD, it was it outranked as the tallest structure on Earth - which it was for more than 43 centuries. The sloping angle of its sides is 51 degrees and 51 minutes. Each of these sides are carefully oriented to correspond with the cardinal points of a compass - north, south, east, and west. At all levels, the horizontal cross section of the Great Pyramid of Giza is a square, and the length of each side measures 751 ft. The maximum error between side lengths is actually less than 0.1%! The structure is made up of 2 million stone blocks (approximately), each of them weighing above two tons.

Know more about Giza and Egypt :

The north face of the Great Pyramid of Giza has the pyramid's entrance. A number of corridors, galleries, and escape shafts either lead to the King's burial chamber. The King's chamber is housed in the heart of the pyramid. Like many smaller pyramids in the region, the Great Pyramids too were built off the West bank of the Nile.
