Climatic conditions in Turkey

The diverse nature of the landscape and the existence of the mountains that run parallel to the coasts results in the significant difference in climatic conditions that exists among different regions of Turkey. While the coastal regions experiences milder climates, the interior part of the land such as Anatolia plateau experiences extreme of temperature with hot summers and cold winters topped with limited rainfall. So a general overall climate cannot be spoken of in case of Turkey because of the diverse geographical conditions that mark the country.


The climate is moderate with the temperature touching 4 C in winter and 27C in summer in Istanbul and around the Sea of Marmara. The temperature can drop below zero as well in winter. A mild Mediterranean climate with an average temperature of 9C in winter and 29C in summer exists in Western Anatolia.The same climate exists on the southern coast of Anatolia. There is a great temperature difference between day and night in the climate of the Anatolian Plateau.
There is low rainfall with more snow. The average temperature is 23C in summer and -2C in winter. The climate is wet, warm and humid in the Black Sea area with the temperature in summer reading 23C and winter recording 7C. There exists long hard winter with snow lying on the ground for the time period between November till the end of April in Eastern Anatolia and South-eastern Anatolia. The average temperature reads -13C in winter and 17C in summer. The best season to make a trip to Turkey would be the spring and fall seasons, although the tourist high season is generally marked as the period starting from mid-June through mid-September. The sky is generally clear during this time of the year and one can expect mild to warm temperature during this time accompanied by some rain.
