Travel etiquettes in Iraq

The common belief says “when in Rome be like a Roman”. So the general belief upholds the notion that when you are actually visiting a country, then you need to mould yourself according to same basic travel etiquettes that are followed widely in Iraq. The basic travel etiquettes that can be followed while in Iraq include:

Find the local rhythm: While staying in a particular place for a few days one needs to get him/her self accustomed to the lifestyle of the natives of that place. Every place follows its own standards of living and Iraq is no exception. So in order to gel along well with the natives and not be felt as a misfit, it is important to get one’s self accustomed to the tunes of the local rhythm.

Make a good first impression: It is important to be familiar with the local customs and mannerisms in order to respect the locals and feel an integral part of them. It is important to know how to greet the locals, both formally as well as informally, so that as a tourist, you create a good first impression, which is going to last with them as long as you remain as a visitor to that place.
Avoid careless judgment: Try not to pass on any unwelcome comments without quite knowing in details about the matter concerned. Try and do away with unnecessary comparisons between the homeland and the place you have come to visit.

Mind your table manners: One ought to be extra cautious about the various table manners existing around different countries of the world so that he/she gets accustomed to the local mannerisms and is able to feel him/her self to be a part of the place rather than an outsider. By educating one’s self on the prevalent local customs, a tourist would get to know that Chileans expect wine to be poured with the right hand.

Speak the language: Language is an integral part of communication between two individuals. As a tourist one should at least have a fair idea of the language of the place he/she is visiting in order to communicate at the basic level with the locals and Iraq is no exception to this basic travel etiquette

Do not over tip: It is always recommended not to spend too much in a visiting land in terms of paying tips. A fine balance between over tip and under tip should put the tourist in a firm and comfortable position in a visiting country.

Watch your gestures: Any incorrect movement can invite trouble in a new place. So it is suggested to be careful in terms of gesture in a visiting country.

Dress respectfully: One needs to be properly and well dressed in order to create that ‘first impression’.

Be a thoughtful guest: Small gifts as token of appreciation and friendship for the host matters a lot.
