Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

Originally seven in number, these ancient world structures were looked upon as man-made miracles. However, not all the Seven Wonders of the World exist today. A list of these miraculous examples of architecture was first compiled around the second century BC and the first reference to it is found in Herodotus' History way back in the 5th century BC.

A list of the names of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World in chronological order are:

The Great Pyramid of Giza
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
The Colossus of Rhodes
The Pharos of Alexandria

The Great Pyramid of Giza serves as a tomb for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu. Located near the ancient city of Memphis, it is an enormous structure built entirely of stone. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of Ancient World to have survived the ravages of time.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon is actually a palace within which a garden is crafted. Located on the banks of the river Euphrates, it was commissioned by King Nebuchadnezzar II. However, chances are that it could well have been a figment of imagination - a brain child of the ancient Greek historians and poets.

The Statue of Zeus in Olympia was sculpted by Pheidias, a renowned sculptor of his times. Made of ivory and gold, the statue of the father of the Greek Pantheon was finally ravaged by a severe fire in AD 462; but until then, it enjoyed quite an active life for a statue.

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus is a temple dedicated to the Greek goddess of hunting, wild nature and fertility, located in Asia Minor. Herostratus burned the temple to the ground to immortalize his name - he succeeded!

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus built to entomb King Maussollos, it is located in the Persian satrap of Caria. Its construction began during his lifetime, commissioned by his wife and sister! It no longer remains.

The Colossus of Rhodes was erected by the Greeks; it was a colossus of Helios the sun-god. It is located near the harbor of a Mediterranean Island. It was destroyed by an earthquake in about 226 BC. The Colossus broke at the weakest part - his knee.

The Pharos of Alexandria was a lighthouse built by the Ptolemies. It was located on the island of Pharos off the coast of their capital city. It no longer remains.
