| The Nanjing University is one of the premier universities of China, which works under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education. The university was founded in 1902 but then it was named as the Sanjiang Normal School, which subsequently over a series of changes was known as the National Central University. |

However, in 1949 the university was further renamed as the National Nanjing University, until the Ministry of Education gave its present name, Nanjing University in 1950. Although the university previously included in its fold departments of Engineering and Agriculture, but these got separated from the main body in 1952 and Liberal Arts and Social Sciences became its major concern and it finally was established in its present form in 1888 as the University of Nanking. The previous campus of the university was in Sipailou, which was eventually shifted to Gulou. However, at present we find that the university has two campuses covering a total area of approximately 600 acres. |
