Although the university previously included in its fold departments of Engineering and Agriculture, but these got separated from the main body in 1952 and Liberal Arts and Social Sciences became its major concern and it finally was established in its present form in 1888 as the University of Nanking. The previous campus of the university was in Sipailou, which was eventually shifted to Gulou.
