The currency of Peru is Nuevo Sol. It is usually around 3.50 soles to 1.00 US Dollar. The exchange rate for the Peruvian currency might differ from day to day. The best currency to carry while you are on a trip to Peru would be the US Dollar. Apart from the US dollar, any other currency might be difficult to exchange outside Lima. Since the retail stores do not have change often, it would be better to carry bills which are in lower denominations.

The same goes for the taxi rides in Peru as well because the taxi drivers generally do not have much change. Dollar bills that are old will generally not be accepted by vendors, banks, exchange houses, and other such places. Be very careful about any fake currency that might be in circulation. In Peru, the most widely accepted credit card is Visa. Master Card, American Express and Diner's Club are the other available options.

Most of the ATMs of Peru work on the Plus system although there are ATMs in Peru which accepts Star, Cirrus, and Interlink. At times, the retail stores, hotels and restaurants in Peru will add an 8% commission to the final bill if you are paying in your credit or your debit card. Traveler's cheque is a good way of carrying money overseas. These cheques are difficult to change and moreover the exchange rate is not as favorable as if you used cash.
