Banaue Rice Terraces

The Banaue Rice Terraces are two thousand year old terraces that were engraved into the mountains of Ifugao in the Philippines by ancestors of the native people of Batad. These terraces are considered a wondrous creation as it is considered that the terraces were built with minimal equipments, largely by hand. For over 2,000 years, the people of Batad have built these terraces, one stone at a time and for this superb feat of engineering. Any engineer would be impressed by the ingenuity of the early settlers when they constructed the Banaue rice terraces.

In fact, this tourist attraction is considered by many scholars to be the eighth wonder of the world. This growing, living stairway extends far beyond the vista of our eyes.

The terraces are located approximately 5000 feet above sea level and cover nearly 4000 square miles of the mountainside. They are fed by an ancient irrigation system located from the rainforests above the mountains. The Banaue Rice Terraces are referred as the eighth wonder of the world and resembles the shape of an amphitheater, like that of Colloseum of Rome. Rice terraces are common throughout Asia but nowhere are they as impressive as in the rocky mountains of northern Luzon Province.

Locals inhabitants till date still tend to the rice and vegetables on the terraces, although more and younger Ifugaos do not find farming appealing anymore and are interested in earning a different means of living. A glimpse of the culture of this place can be acquired by studying the natives of this place. They wear Head dresses that are made of dyed feathers. Sleeveless blouses that look like vests are embroidered and adorned with beads of all sizes. And g-strings are decorated with attractive colored patterns of squares and lines. The people and this place altogether reflect a creative culture.
