Aztec History

The Aztec history is one of the most interesting accounts of human will power and determination. Here is Allwondersoftheworld providing you with information on the Aztecs and their dynasty. The Valley of Mexico is the bed where the Aztec civilization grew and prospered during the 12th and the 13th century. The Valley of Mexico is a large basin, which is oval in shape and it is situated 7500 feet above the sea level.
The civilization spread over a large number of towns and cities with Tenochtitlan was not only the largest city but also its capital. Although there has been no written records of history of the early exploits and conquest of the Aztecs, but according to legends the Aztecs were originally from the Aztlan Island, which means "White Place - Place of Herons". It was under the leadership of their chief Tenoch that the Aztecs first came to the Valley of Mexico but initially they were despised by the people on the island because they were quite barbaric in their habits and customs.

They lived on stolen food and snakes and vermin were their staple diet. It was only in the 14th century that the ruler of the island Huitzilopochtli allotted an island on the Lake Texcoco to Tenoch. It was here that they build the city called Tenochtitlan, which was named after their leader Tenoch.
The initial years of settling on this island turned out to be quite difficult for the Aztecs, because the island had scanty resources, so they managed to build nothing more than mud huts with thatched roofs and a few temples. However, gradually with their diligent efforts they started overcoming all obstacles to develop their farming and agriculture, which was called Chinampas, and in no time they transformed the swampy land into a very fertile one.
This was followed by the growth of the city and men began to specialize in various art and crafts. Woodcraft was what the Aztecs specialized in mostly because wood was used extensively to build strong foundations on the marshy land. After building up the city, it was in 1376 that the Aztecs finally thought of selecting their ruler and Acamapichtli was their first ruler. It was in the 15th century that the Aztecs thought of strengthening their military strength by developing their relations with Texcoco and Tacuba, who were their neighbors. It was after the end of the rule of Tenochtitlans in the 16th century that the Spanish, led by Cortez defeated them and the Catholics thought the Aztecs were a threat to them so they tried all ways to destroy their culture and traditions. However, the Aztec culture still survives because of the few who survived the hostile situations.
