Aztec Calendar

Allwondersoftheworld is here to provide you information on the intricacies of the civil and the ritual calendar of Aztecs.

Civil Calendar:  Xiuhpohualli

The Aztec calendar was made on the basis of the solar year, which was used to mark the important ceremonies and rituals for the Aztecs. These rituals and ceremonies were mostly related to farming and agriculture. According to the Aztec calendar, the year is divided into 18 months and each month has 20 days. There are four weeks, each having five days. This made the year of 365 days in addition to the five empty days, which are known as "nemontemi".

These five days were considered to be very ominous and it was to be observed with complete stoppage of all kinds of work and function. The Aztec calendar begins from early February.

Ritual Calendar:  Tonalpohualli
Tonalpohualli is the sacred ritual calendar of the Aztecs, which was published in the tonalamatl or the book of days. This book was green in color and made either out of deerskin or paper made of bark. This record was kind of a horoscope, where we could find the predictions and forecasts of individual days. 260 days comprised the year for this calendar. The days were given dates and the weeks comprised of 13 days. There were individual gods who were made to preside over each day.
The system of the calendar can be better explained if we think of two adjoining wheels. On one of the wheels we have 1 to 13 imprinted and the second wheel has 20 different symbols on it. The numbers now take on a particular symbol or glyph each day. This continues for 13 days, which denotes the completion of a week and the cycle begins anew on the 14th day again.
